I have photographed Calabrian weddings in every month of the year, December included. The truth is there is no perfect month in the abstract: there is a perfect month for the wedding you have in mind. A beach rite and a mountain masseria reception need opposite calendars.
Here I describe Calabria month by month from the point of view I know best: light. The weather you can read in a forecast, but the hour the sun drops behind the Tyrrhenian decides what your photographs will look like.

April and May: the best light of the year
These are the months I recommend most. The countryside is green, temperatures sit between 18 and 25 degrees, the coast is not yet crowded and late-afternoon light is soft without being weak. Rain is possible — I photographed a glorious April in Torre Melissa and a rainy September in Nocera Terinese, so the weather ignores statistics — but a solid indoor plan B solves it.
Practical advantage: venues are more available and suppliers less under pressure. The work is better, and you can see it.
June, July and August: sea, heat and big numbers
This is the Calabrian high season: beach weddings, guests flying home from abroad, receptions ending at three in the morning. The price is the heat and a very hard midday light, which becomes a real problem at venues without shade.
The answer is all in the timing: ceremony no earlier than 5pm, aperitivo in the shade, couple session in the last forty minutes of sun. If instead the ceremony is set for 11am, indoor and shaded areas must be planned before the day itself.
September and October: the perfect compromise
September in Calabria is still summer: the sea is warm, evenings are long and the light has already lost July's aggression. October is my favourite month for editorials and intimate weddings: warm colour, golden countryside, no crowds.
It is also when the historic villas are at their best. The autumn editorial I shot at Villa Letizia came precisely from this light.
November, December and winter weddings
The Calabrian winter is not hostile: days are short, but the low midday light is beautiful and the venues empty out. A Christmas wedding — I photographed one at Casino Lenza — has an atmosphere summer cannot replicate.
One iron rule: bring everything forward. In December the sun sets around 4:40pm, so the couple session belongs before the reception, not after.
Mountains or sea: two different calendars
If your venue is in the Sila, the Serre or the Reventino hills, the calendar flips: July and August become the most comfortable months, because at altitude the heat is manageable and the forest acts as a natural diffuser. Borgo del Convento, in the Serre of Vibo Valentia, proves you can marry in August without suffering.
On the coast, June and September remain the most balanced choice.

By choosing a venue with a credible indoor plan B. I photographed exactly that at Villa Grandinetti: the rain moved dinner into the indoor halls without taking anything away from the evening.
